Group One due Wednesday 1/14

Go to Google maps and type in Mulberry Street NYC. You will find a street level view of the street. Describe what you see on the street. What do you see that gives you clues that this is an Italian section of the city? Make sure to post your answer in the comment section with your name.

  1. You can tell that Mulberry Street is an Italian section of the city because of the colors and there are alot of arches that are red, white, and green, the Italian flag colors. I also noticed there are alot of Italian restraunts like Avella, which is on the corner. Also if you go a little farther along there is a restaraunt named Piemonte which has different foods on the sign that you might eat in Italy. There are also signs that are written in both English or Italian.

  2. This street looks very happy compared to the cover of the book. It has arches that are red, green and white and it has a lot of, if not all, Italian restaraunts. There are also some designs in the bricks that might be somewhat Italian. Overall, if I were to walk onto this street while in New York, I would immediatly recognize it as Italian.

  4. This part of town looks a lot happier than how it looks on the cover of the book. There are a lot decorations, restaurants, and there is also a good amount of activity taking place. I am pretty sure this is all due to the elapsed time from when our book was taking place and today. You can definitely tell that this part of town is Italian because of the following details: there are many green, red, and white decorations and arches hanging at the top of the streets (green, red, and white are the colors of the Italian flag). There are restaurants that are titled with Italian names, such as: Alleva, Piemonte Ravioli Co., and the name of the food center is Italian Food Center. All of those restaurant and store names make it pretty obvious they are serving Italian food. Lastly, this may be a bit stereotypical, but if you look close enough, you can see that some of the men do look like your typical Italian guy (tall, and a bit heavy). Although, the most important details that show it is an Italian town are the green, red, and white decorations and the restaurant names.

  5. Mulberry Street is very festive according to Google maps. There are colorful arches hanging from poles about once per block. I see pedestrians, lots of cars, and many Italian restaurants. I can tell this is an Italian section of the city because all the arches are; green, white and red, representing the Italian flag. The restaurants have Italian names, for example, Ristoraunte Italiano. This is definitely and Italian section of the city.

  6. Mulberry street is sort of the heart of Little Italy. There are many Italian restaurants and it is very busy. It's not like Manhattan, there are very few tall buildings, most of the buildings there look built a long time ago. There are many decorations held up, and it looks very Italian because of all the flag colors everywhere. Many names of the Italian restaurants don't just say, "olive garden" or something of American culture. I'm not certain, but most of them sound as if they are written in Italian. It was what I imagined it to look like.
